RIFLE & PISTOL
Note: This document is an overview of the above systems. Each year may have different criteria, which should be referred to in conjunction with this information to fully understand which matches carry selection sanctioning.
For easy of interpretation, readers should refer to the “competition structure” for the given year.
Thanks to the efforts of various NSW ranges that agree, and apply, to run state sanctioned matches or events, the Military/Service discipline is able to implement fair and balanced ranking/selection criteria for “Shooter Of The Year” and “State Teams Selection”.
Ranking systems are required if, and when, the time comes that a State Team is required to represent NSW in this discipline. Results are recorded to fairly pick a team that has fulfilled fair selection criteria and requirements. Then, if one of the qualified team members cannot make the event, then that shooter may be replaced with the next best ranked shooter, and so on, until the team position is filled.
A separate state ranking system exists for Rifle and Pistol. Shooter of the Year and State Teams are based as on this ranking system.
Scores eligible for the rifle ranking’s come from the state sanctioned matches for rifle classes A/B/C.
Scores eligible for the pistol ranking’s come from the state sanctioned matches for pistol classes 1 & 2 (both classes 1 & 2 pistols are combined and compete together equally).
When an event that requires a state team to participate in an event made up of both rifle and pistol combined (not individual), a NSW team shall be selected based on the aggregate of both the Rifle and Pistol ranking systems.
Ranking’s for both Rifle and Pistol will be determined by using the filtered raw target scores from the sanctioned matches and adding them together to form an aggregate. Therefore, it is NOT a point based system like the HoF, but a system based on your shooting results.
Eligibility
These systems are open to NSW members only – based on membership state. Shooters from other states who attend the events that are used to form the rankings do have their scores accepted in the table, however are blocked from selection.
These systems were implemented in 2003 for rifle, but criteria for this honour was backdated to the 2000 state based events (State Championships and City Vs Country etc). This was done as to not lose all the hard work done during these pioneering years of the discipline in NSW. Shooters who qualified for SOTY and State Teams over the years of 2000, 2001 and 2002, were recognised at a Discipline General Meeting held during the 2003 CvC.
2004 saw the implementation of a ranking system for Pistol events and matches. This also gives all NSW shooters the ability to qualify for SOTY and State Teams for both rifle and pistol separately.
The discipline year does not directly coincide with the calendar year. Therefore, the “discipline year” runs between each year’s state championships.
Both Rifle and Pistol ranking systems are based on the results from sanctioned matches/events held over a given year (refer to the given year’s discipline structure).
Only matches for State Ranking’s that are sanctioned state events, and appropriately advertised in the AS magazine and/or NSW Newsletter will be used.
Ranking’s will be determined by sorting all shooter aggregate scores shot over the discipline year, in descending order.
State Teams are derived from the State Ranking system The top 4 ranking shooters qualify for the state team, and the shooter finishing in 5th place will qualify as a reserve.
This state team will be the current team used throughout the following year, or until the end of the following discipline year – which ever finishes first.
SOTY for both rifle and pistol is simply the person who finishes with the highest aggregate score from the State Ranking System.
Successful SOTY and State Team shooters, for both rifle and pistol, will be announced at the following NSW State Championships or as soon as possible. This team will remain the “current” team until the conclusion of the following State Championships and GP series, plus any other scheduled sanctioned matches.
Historical results, as well as progressive results, are found on the NSW discipline web site.
State Team members may purchase the official State Team Patch, at their cost. If they so wish to obtain the patch, they must apply in writing to the SDC accompanied with the necessary funds.
Both rifle and pistol shooters who qualify for SOTY and/or State Teams will have their names added to the honour board.
All information and historical records are maintained and stored on the NSW Military Service Discipline web site.
