The 2008 City vs Country was held from Friday 14th to Sunday 16th March at the Windamere Regional Shooting Complex.

*** Country WINS ***

With the last rain falling in February it was dry and unusually hot for the regular March competition. Pistol finally got under way on range 1 about 10am, after the stragglers had been rounded up. Attendance was up from previous years with 41 competitors for pistol and 29 for cadet/trainer.

In the pistol 3P core match - class 1, Simon Ross (the burglar from Canberra) cleaned up with 355.18, closely followed by Rob Irving with 348.17 and Don Mackay with 329.8. Class 2 top three was Rob Irving 354.27, Andy Prowse 345.12 & Peter Thistleton 341.10.

This years City pistol team consisted of Simon Ross, Rob Irving, Kerry Benson & Paul Wilkinson won with 1354.50 defeating the Country team of Don Mackay, Darren Pearce, Dave Toovey & Mick Toovey on 1286.21.

Following the pistol events was the cadet/trainer, match 18. Some of the more enthusiastic competitors almost made it into the last pistol event. Top shots - George Pabis (again) using a No8 145.9, Rob Irving 144.12 - cadet & Kim Prehn 143.13 - cadet, top junior; Andrew Brown 143.11 also came in 4th using a cadet.

Once everything was locked up for the day, Friday evening activites commenced. A general discussion around the camping area on how the wheels fell off & other matters of importance.

With 58 competitors for Saturday's standard rifle events, it started out warm, then developed into hot & dry conditions. The days activities began with the 300 deliberate, a top score of 50.6 by Kim Prehn followed by Darren Ottery 48.3 & Dick Antcliff 47.5. Next was the 3P core match, those pushy A graders showed some of the M graders how it should be done. Dave 144.10, Terry 143.7 & Graham 142.8 (all currently A), Ben 149.19, Andy 141.12 & Frank 136.6 (all M). Rapid B, where none of the top shooters scored below 98 - Craig Mahoney, Darren Ottery, Peter Brown & Andrew Brown (jnrs). The Noel Cross Memorial Shield, shot on silhouttes, was again interesting due to the chickens being moved out to 150m (instead of 100m, due to target damage in previous shoots). Top score went to Rob Irving on 94, very closely followed by Ben Doherty & Craig Mahoney on 92, there had to be a countback on rams to break the tie.

Ladies trophies went to Robyn McPherson, Jeanette Doherty & Gisella Herreros.

Country won the rifle events with 1474.101 to City's 1470.90.
Country team – Darren Ottery, Ben Doherty, Mort & Matthew McPherson.
City team – Craig Mahoney, Rob Irving, Kim Prehn & Graham Smith.

Dinner this year was rolled roasts of lamb & beef with veges & dessert, plus some local wines which went down nicely. A huge thank you to the catering committee - Jan & Tom Wensrich for an extremely satisfying meal. Well into the evening's activities, mention was made about “queens” (both drag & range) & other highly placed personages, after which further discussion ensued.

Sunday's modified events were 3P core & Rapid B. Attendance was down on last year with 25 starters. Unfortunetly some had to leave early as they had work commitments on Monday. Top six -  Ben Doherty, Rob Irving, Dave Toovey, Bob Harold, Dick Bennett, & Tim Hayes.

A big thank you to the deep north contingent, Darren, Matt, Richard, Andrew, Josh, Robyn, Jim, Andrew, Peter & the Mort for travelling to the shoot & helping Country win this year. Also thank you to all other long distance travellers who helped make the City vs Country a competitive & enjoyable shoot in 2008.

Once again the Mudgee branch have provided Service Discipline shooters with a memorable event. Due to some absences, most of the organising and range officer load fell on Dave Toovey and Andrew Prowse assisted by Gisella & Carlos Herreros, Darren Pearce, Mick Toovey, Rob Prowse, Ben Doherty and Tim Hayes for range duties & score board.
